Rogers Brubaker

Rogers Brubaker is an American sociologist, born in Evanston, Illinois, in 1956, and holder of the UCLA Foundation Chair in the sociology department at the University of California, Los Angeles. His scholarship on nationalism, ethnicity and citizenship challenges conventional treatments of these categories as fixed properties of groups, arguing instead that ethnicity and nationhood should be understood as ways of framing and interpreting social experience that come into being through specific political and social processes; his books include Citizenship and Nationhood in France and Germany (1992), Nationalism Reframed (1996) and Ethnicity Without Groups (2004). His more recent work, including Trans: Gender and Race in an Age of Unsettled Identities (2016), extends this relational approach to gender identity and digital hyperconnectivity.
