John Rex

John Rex was a South African-born British sociologist. Born in Port Elizabeth, he was radicalized after working for the South African Bantu Affairs Administration and moved to Britain. He held lecturing positions at the universities of Leeds from 1949 to 1962, Birmingham from 1962 to 1964, Durham from 1964 to 1970, Warwick, Aston from 1979 to 1984, Toronto from 1974 to 1975, Cape Town in 1991 and New York in 1996. He was a member of the UNESCO International Experts' Committee on Racism and Race Prejudice in 1967 and president of the International Sociological Association's Research Committee on Racial and Ethnic Minorities from 1974 to 1982.
