Ernest Gellner was a French-born British-Czech philosopher and social anthropologist, born in 1925, whose central themes included modernisation theory and nationalism, the latter of which he developed into a leading theory of nationalism. His multicultural perspective let him engage with both the Western world and the Muslim world. He died in 1995.
