Respect

Cultural and Socialization Institutions

Respect, also called esteem, is a positive feeling or deferential action directed toward someone or something regarded as important, conveying admiration for valued qualities and expressed by honoring a person needs or feelings. In many cultures people are presumed worthy of respect until they prove otherwise, while in honor cultures respect is more often earned through action than granted by default. Courtesies that signal respect vary by culture and include phrases such as thank you or namaste, and gestures such as a bow, a smile, direct eye contact or a handshake, with the same gesture read very differently depending on context.
