Physical intimacy

Cultural and Socialization Institutions

Physical intimacy is sensuous proximity or touching, an act or reaction that expresses feelings such as close friendship, platonic love, romantic love or sexual attraction between people. Examples include holding hands, hugging, kissing, caressing and sexual activity, and such contact can convey the real meaning of an interaction in ways speech alone cannot. It can occur between any people, though because it often communicates positive or intimate feelings it is most common between people who already share a familial, platonic or romantic relationship, with romantic relationships generally involving more of it. This kind of physical affection is strongly correlated with overall relationship and partner satisfaction, and a sustained closeness such as prolonged eye contact can itself count as a form of physical intimacy even without actual touch.
