Male bonding is the formation of close personal relationships and friendship between men, a form of homosociality built through shared activities, emotional support, and rituals. Men frequently bond through sports and hobbies, where cooperation, competition, and shared experience strengthen ties, and research shows that many men value and practice emotional intimacy within friendships more than earlier stereotypes of surface-level male relationships suggest. Groups of men also use informal customs, such as watching sports together, and more formal rites, such as fraternity initiations, to cement relationships, though such practices are sometimes criticized for enforcing rigid ideas of masculinity. Despite being studied across anthropology, psychology, and sociology, male bonding remains understudied, especially regarding adult friendships across the lifespan.
