Maitri, a Sanskrit term also rendered Maitri with a long i, refers to benevolence, loving kindness, friendliness and active good will toward others. It appears across ancient and medieval Indian texts including the Upanishads, Jain sutras and Buddhist suttas, and within Buddhism it is counted among the four sublime states and one of the ten paramis of Theravada Buddhism, set out at length in the Metta Sutta.
