Friendship recession

Cultural and Socialization Institutions

A friendship recession is a decline in the number of friends people report having, observed in Canada and the United States, a trend that emerged in the late twentieth century and that researchers believe carries significant consequences for wellbeing. Survey data illustrates the scale of the shift: in 1990 about a third of Americans reported having ten or more close friends, but by 2021 that figure had fallen to just 13 percent. Researchers theorize that this decline in close friendship has broad-ranging effects on both mental and physical health, representing a measurable change in how people maintain their social networks with potential consequences for individual and collective wellbeing across North America.
