In sociology, a friend of a friend describes the relational connection formed through a mutual acquaintance: person C is a friend of a friend of person A when a third person, B, is a friend of both. This transitive social connection is not itself a friendship, though it can hold potential for coalition-building and the spread of information across a social network. Not every such indirect connection develops into a direct friendship, so the relationship occupies a distinct position between strangers and friends, capable of creating both opportunity and tension as people navigate ties formed indirectly through their existing personal networks.
