Cross-sex friendship

Cultural and Socialization Institutions

A cross-sex friendship is a platonic relationship between two non-familial people of differing sex or gender. It is widespread in heterosexual culture, while cross-sex friendships involving mixed sexual orientations often mirror mate-selection preferences and can provide opportunities for short-term mating; the relationship may sometimes come to be regarded as familial, though pop culture tends to portray such friendships with skepticism because of the potential for romantic or sexual attraction.
