Vladimir Lenin, born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, was a Russian revolutionary, politician and political theorist who led the Bolshevik faction of Russian Marxism and served as the first head of government of Soviet Russia and later the Soviet Union. His theoretical writings adapted Marxism to conditions he saw in early twentieth century Russia, developing positions on the revolutionary vanguard party, imperialism and the state that became known collectively as Leninism. Those positions shaped the doctrine of communist parties worldwide long after his own government ended. Under this pseudonym, in 1902 he published his most influential publication to date, the pamphlet What Is to Be Done?, which outlined his thoughts on the need for a vanguard party to lead the proletariat to revolution.

There, Lenin began work on the book that became The State and Revolution, an exposition on how he believed the proletarian state would develop after the proletariat revolution, and how from then on the state would gradually wither away, leaving a pure communist society.
