Karl Marx (1818-1883) was a German philosopher and social and political theorist whose work founded historical materialism, the analysis of societal structure and change through class struggle under capitalism. Marx co-authored The Communist Manifesto with Friedrich Engels in 1848 and set out his critique of political economy in his major work Das Kapital. His account of class conflict and social structure stands, alongside Durkheim and Weber, among the classical traditions from which academic sociology developed; this entity covers that sociological theorist facet of his work.
