Cultural and Socialization Institutions

New York University is a private research university in New York City. The New York State Legislature chartered it in 1831, and Albert Gallatin founded it in 1832 as a non-sectarian, all-male institution near City Hall with a curriculum focused on secular education. It moved in 1833 and has kept its main campus in Greenwich Village around Washington Square Park since then, adding an engineering school in Brooklyn and graduate schools across Manhattan. With more than fifty thousand students enrolled in 2021 it is one of the largest private universities in the United States.
