Herbert Marcuse

Herbert Marcuse was a German and American philosopher, social critic and political theorist, born in Berlin in 1898 and associated with the Frankfurt School of critical theory. He studied at the Friedrich Wilhelm University of Berlin and the University of Freiburg, earning his doctorate under Martin Heidegger, and became a prominent figure at the Frankfurt-based Institute for Social Research. In his writings he criticized capitalism, modern technology, Soviet communism and popular culture, arguing that each represented a new form of social control. He died in 1979.
