Eve Chiapello is a French sociologist, born in 1965, who is a director of studies at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris, where she holds a chair in the sociology of the transformation of capitalism. With Luc Boltanski she co-authored The New Spirit of Capitalism, published in French in 1999 and translated into nine languages, whose central argument is that from the 1970s capitalists began adopting a libertarian conception of running the workplace, influenced by 1960s counterculture, but that this maintained exploitation under a new guise rather than achieving genuine emancipation. Her other work includes Artists Versus Managers (1998), examining artistic critique of capitalism and its later co-optation, and the co-authored Management Tools: A Social Science Perspective (2019), a critical discourse analysis of managerial and corporate language.
