This subcategory gathers indigenous peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean documented by a distinct language and cultural tradition predating European colonization and continuing today, including the Aymara and Quechua of the Andes, the Mapuche of southern South America, and the Maya peoples of Mesoamerica, who are documented as a family of related but distinct communities rather than one uniform people. It does not cover the states of the region, which Political and Geography carry.
