This subcategory gathers social groups documented as distinct peoples of the African continent, defined primarily by shared language, ancestry, and cultural practice rather than by modern national citizenship. It spans societies from West Africa (Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Fulani), East Africa (Maasai, Oromo, Somali, Amhara), and southern and northern Africa (Zulu, San, Berber, Tuareg). It does not include African nation states themselves, which the Political and Geography atlases carry, nor African religious traditions, which Divinity carries; this group holds the ethnographic and social-organizational account of the peoples themselves.
