Anibal Quijano (1928-2018) was a Peruvian sociologist and social theorist best known for originating the concept of the coloniality of power, describing how the racial classifications and hierarchies established under European colonialism in the Americas outlived formal political independence to continue structuring labor, knowledge and social relations in Latin America. Building on and departing from dependency theory, his framework linked coloniality of power to a broader coloniality of knowledge, arguing that Eurocentric rationality itself became a tool of domination. His work became foundational to the modernity/coloniality research program and influenced decolonial theory across the humanities and social sciences.
