Guy Debord was a French Marxist theorist, philosopher, filmmaker and critic of work who helped found the Letterist International and later the Situationist International, after briefly belonging to the group Socialisme ou Barbarie. He is best known for his 1967 work The Society of the Spectacle, which argued that modern capitalist life had been reorganized around passive consumption of mediated images rather than lived, direct experience. His theoretical writing and filmmaking together shaped the Situationist critique of everyday life under advanced capitalism.
