Ernst Bloch (1885-1977) was a German Marxist philosopher influenced by Hegel and Marx as well as by apocalyptic and religious thinkers such as Thomas Müntzer, Paracelsus and Jacob Böhme. He was close to György Lukács, Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Weill, Walter Benjamin and Theodor Adorno, and his work develops an optimistic teleology of human history centered on hope as a structuring social principle.
