Chantal Mouffe, born in 1943, is a Belgian political theorist who teaches at the University of Westminster. With her longtime collaborator Ernesto Laclau she helped develop the Essex School of discourse analysis, and she is a strong critic of deliberative democracy who instead advocates a conflict-oriented model of radical democracy.
