Judith Lorber

Judith Lorber (born 1931) is an American sociologist and professor emerita at the CUNY Graduate Center and Brooklyn College, described as a foundational theorist of the social construction of gender difference who has played a central role in shaping and reshaping gender studies and has more recently called for a de-gendering of the social world. Her book Paradoxes of Gender (1994) argues that gender operates as a major social institution organizing nearly every area of social life, and she received the Jessie Bernard Award in 1996 for scholarship enlarging sociologys view of womens role in society.
