The microsociological tradition studying how meaning, identity and social order are produced through everyday, face to face interaction, gesture and interpretation, rather than imposed by large scale social structures. This group gathers the founders of symbolic interactionism and its close relatives, including ethnomethodology, the dramaturgical analysis of social life as performance, and the phenomenological and grounded theory methods used to study lived social experience from the participant's own point of view, drawn largely from the Chicago School of sociology and its intellectual descendants.
