Punk subculture

The punk subculture emerged in the mid-1970s in the United Kingdom and United States, centered initially on a fast, stripped-down rock music style (documented flagship acts include the Sex Pistols in Britain and the Ramones in New York) and an anti-establishment, do-it-yourself ethos rejecting mainstream commercial music and social convention. Punk style, including deliberately provocative fashion, a distinctive visual aesthetic and self-produced ('DIY') record labels and fanzines, functioned as a documented marker of subcultural belonging distinct from, and often deliberately opposed to, mainstream youth culture of the period. The subculture fragmented into numerous documented regional and stylistic offshoots from the late 1970s onward (including hardcore punk, post-punk and various national scenes), and punk-derived DIY production and anti-commercial values continue to be documented as an influence on subsequent independent music and youth-culture movements.
