Kurds

The Kurds are an Iranic-language-speaking ethnic group native to the mountainous Kurdistan region straddling modern Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria, and are widely described as the largest ethnic group in the world without an internationally recognized state of their own. Kurdish society has historically been organized through tribal confederations and, in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, a range of nationalist and autonomist political movements, including the Kurdistan Regional Government established in Iraq after 1991 with its own recognized federal autonomy. Kurdish identity spans multiple religious traditions, predominantly Sunni Islam alongside significant Alevi, Yazidi-adjacent and other minority communities, and Kurdish political movements and their treatment by host states remain a genuinely debated and actively documented subject in Middle Eastern politics.
