Leland Stanford Junior University, known as Stanford University, is a private research university in Stanford, California. Railroad magnate Leland Stanford, then a United States senator and former governor of California, and his wife Jane founded it in 1885 in memory of their only child, Leland Jr., who died of typhoid at fifteen. It admitted its first students in 1891 as a coeducational and non-denominational institution. After the Second World War its provost Frederick Terman encouraged an entrepreneurial culture that helped give rise to Silicon Valley.
