State Government

Political and Legal Institutions

A state government is the government controlling a subdivision of a country organized under a federal system, sharing political power with the federal or national government above it. A state government's degree of political autonomy, or its subjection to direct control by the federal government, is typically defined by a constitution. It sits within the same institutional family as federalism itself, as one of the constituent layers a federal structure creates.
