Puppet State

Political and Legal Institutions

A puppet state, also called a puppet régime, puppet government or dummy government, is a state that is de jure independent but de facto completely dependent on an outside power and subject to its orders. It carries nominal sovereignty, but a foreign power effectively exercises control through economic or military support, and by leaving a local government in existence the outside power evades responsibility for its actions while at the same time paralysing that government's genuine authority.
