Parenting plan

Kinship Institutions

A parenting plan is a child custody arrangement negotiated by parents, which may be included in a marital separation agreement or a final divorce decree. Its primary purpose is to set out clear agreements about parental responsibilities, including who will carry them out and when and how, reducing the need for court intervention and the cost and uncertainty of litigation for separating families. Because the plan is negotiated rather than imposed, parents can tailor it to their children's particular circumstances and modify it as those circumstances change, so that it continues to serve the children's best interests, and such plans may also build in alternative dispute-resolution mechanisms such as mediation or arbitration, which can be less costly than returning to court.
