Only child

Kinship Institutions

An only child is a person with no siblings, whether by birth or adoption. Only children were relatively uncommon through most of history, but birth rates and average family sizes fell sharply from around the middle of the 20th century, for reasons including concern about overpopulation and women increasingly having their first child later in life because of birth control and greater participation in the workforce; the share of American families with only one child rose during the Great Depression and then fell again during the postwar baby boom.
