Marriage officiant

Kinship Institutions

A marriage officiant, or marriage celebrant, is a person who officiates at a wedding ceremony. Religious weddings are typically officiated according to the couple's own faith tradition, such as a priest or vicar for a Christian wedding, a rabbi for a Jewish ceremony, an imam for an Islamic wedding or a pandit for a Hindu wedding, while non-religious couples may instead choose a government official such as a civil celebrant, judge, mayor or justice of the peace, or forgo an officiant entirely through a self-uniting marriage.
