Manorialism was the organizing economic and social institution of the medieval European countryside, structuring rural life around the manor, a landed estate held by a lord and worked by a dependent peasantry who owed the lord labor, produce, or rent in exchange for the use of land, physical protection, and access to the manor's shared resources and judicial court. The manor typically combined the lord's own demesne land, worked directly for his benefit through peasant labor obligations, with land held by peasant tenants for their own subsistence, along with common pasture, woodland, and other shared resources that the whole manorial community drew upon under customary rules. Manorialism operated as the basic economic unit underpinning the broader political system of feudalism, providing the agricultural surplus and labor that sustained the noble and knightly class, and it is distinguished by historians from serfdom itself, which names the dependent legal status of the unfree peasant tied to the land, since manorialism describes the whole estate-level institution, including its free tenants, common resources, and manorial court, rather than only the condition of its most unfree workers. The institution declined gradually across Western Europe from the fourteenth century onward, accelerated by population loss from the Black Death, the commutation of labor obligations into cash rents, and the gradual rise of a land and wage-labor market, though variants of manorial organization persisted considerably longer in parts of Central and Eastern Europe.
