A khanate was a polity ruled by a khan, khagan, khatun or khanum, typically found among nomadic Mongolic and Turkic societies of the Eurasian Steppe and politically equivalent in status to kinship-based chiefdoms and feudal monarchies. Khanates were organized tribally, with leaders gaining power through the support and loyalty of their warrior subjects and drawing tribute from subordinates to fund the realm. A khaganate, the realm of a khagan, was a larger nomadic state holding subjugation over numerous smaller khanates, and the title khagan, translating as khan of the khans, corresponded roughly in status to an emperor.
