Joint custody is a form of child custody under which custody rights following a separation or divorce are awarded to both parents rather than to one alone. It may refer to joint physical custody, under which the child divides residential time between both parents, joint legal custody, under which both parents share authority over decisions in the child's upbringing, or a combination of both forms together.
