Familialism

Political and Legal Institutions

Familialism, or familism, is a philosophy that gives priority to the family. The term familialism is used specifically for advocating a welfare system in which families are presumed to take responsibility for the care of their own members rather than leaving that responsibility to government, while familism relates more to family values and can mean prioritizing the needs of the family above those of the individual; the two terms are often used interchangeably.
