A domestic partnership is an intimate relationship between people, usually a couple, who live together and share a common domestic life without being married. In some jurisdictions, people registered in a domestic partnership receive legal benefits such as a guaranteed right of survivorship, hospital visitation rights, and other protections that would otherwise depend on marriage. The institution functions as a legal status giving couples some of the protections associated with marriage without requiring them to marry.
