A council of elders is a political and legal institution found across many traditional societies worldwide in which senior members of a community, valued for their age, experience or lineage standing, deliberate collectively to resolve disputes, make communal decisions or advise a chief or ruler. Institutional forms of elder councils have been documented in societies ranging from African village and lineage councils and Native American tribal councils to the Roman Senate, whose name derives from the Latin senex, meaning old man, reflecting the same underlying institutional logic of authority vested in seniority. Councils of elders typically operate through consensus-building and customary law rather than formal codified statutes, and remain active institutions of local governance and dispute resolution in many parts of the world alongside modern state legal systems.
