A cooperative is an autonomous association of persons who unite voluntarily to meet shared economic, social, and cultural needs through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise, and cooperatives operate across a wide range of sectors, including retail, housing, agriculture, and finance, serving an estimated one billion members across ninety-six countries as of 2012. Cooperative governance is distinguished by democratic member control, in which each member holds one vote regardless of the amount of capital invested, a structure that differs sharply from conventional corporations, where voting power typically corresponds to shareholdings, with members electing a board of directors from among their own ranks and retaining direct influence over major decisions. The movement's core purpose is meeting members' collective needs rather than maximizing returns for outside investors, with economic benefits generally shared among members proportionally to their participation, through mechanisms such as patronage refunds or dividends, rather than strictly according to capital contributed; most cooperatives are guided by the seven Rochdale Principles, covering voluntary membership, democratic control, member economic participation, autonomy, education, cooperation among cooperatives, and concern for community. Worker cooperatives in particular have shown notable resilience, with roughly eighty percent surviving their first five years compared with forty-four percent of conventional businesses, and the largest cooperative in the world, the Mondragon Corporation, has operated continuously since 1956, employing thousands of people across multiple ventures while reinvesting profits into community development.
