Cohabitation

Kinship Institutions

Cohabitation is an arrangement in which people who are not legally married live together as a couple, often in a romantic or sexually intimate relationship on a long-term or permanent basis. Such arrangements have become increasingly common in Western countries since the late 20th century amid changing social views, especially regarding marriage. The term dates from the mid 16th century, in use with this meaning as early as 1530.
