Biblical patriarchy, also called Christian patriarchy, is a set of beliefs within Evangelical Protestant Christianity holding that the father is the head of the home and responsible for the conduct of his family. The movement gained prominence in the 1990s and 2000s through Douglas Phillips, founder of Vision Forum Ministries, and its most recognized current spokesperson is theologian Douglas Wilson; other adherents associated with it include R.C. Sproul Jr., Voddie Baucham, the Duggar family, and Dale Partridge. Vision Forum's own published tenets teach that God established distinct gender roles at creation, that husbands hold authority over wives and children, that male leadership extends from the home into churches and society, that women's primary sphere should be domestic, and that unmarried adult women remain subject to their father's authority. The movement presents these arrangements as reflecting a divinely ordained structure across every institutional sphere of life.
