The Bank of South Sudan is the central bank of South Sudan, established by an act of parliament in July 2011, the month of the country's independence, as the successor to the earlier Bank of Southern Sudan. Headquartered in the capital, Juba, with branches in Wau, Yei and Malakal, it holds the constitutional authority to issue the South Sudanese pound and is wholly owned by the national government. Its duties include establishing and supervising conventional banking services, regulating commercial banks, and acting as financial adviser and banking agent to the government. The governorship has seen heavy turnover reflecting the country's broader political instability, with eleven governors appointed by the president since 2005; Addis Ababa Othow took up the post in July 2026. Foreign reserves have remained thin, reported at roughly 230 million US dollars, underscoring the young institution's fragile footing.
