Autocracy

Political and Legal Institutions

Autocracy is a form of government in which absolute power is held by one person, called an autocrat, and it includes both absolute monarchies and dictatorships, in contrast to democracy and other forms of free government. The autocrat holds total control over the exercise of civil liberties within the autocracy, choosing under what circumstances, if any, they may be exercised, and a government may also blend elements of autocracy and democracy into a mixed regime sometimes called an anocracy, hybrid regime or electoral autocracy.
