Sir Arthur Keith (1866 to 1955) was a British anatomist and physical anthropologist who specialized in the study of human evolution. Born near Aberdeen in Scotland, he took his medical degree at the University of Aberdeen in 1894 with a thesis on the myology of the Catarrhini. He is known for his comprehensive study of the hominid remains from the Mount Carmel caves, published after work in 1929 to 1934, and for the thesis that the spirit of nationalism is a potent factor in the evolutionary differentiation of human races, set out in A New Theory of Human Evolution (1948). Those opinions on race drew debate and criticism at the time and widespread repudiation later.
