Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is a large public land-grant research university with three campuses in New Jersey. It was chartered in 1766 as Queen's College and was affiliated with the Dutch Reformed Church. It is the eighth-oldest college in the United States and one of nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution. In 1825 it was renamed Rutgers College for Colonel Henry Rutgers, whose gift stabilized its finances. It was a private liberal arts college until the mid-twentieth century and became the State University of New Jersey by acts of the legislature in 1945 and 1956.
