Anthropologists of Britain and its Commonwealth who built social anthropology as a comparative study of kinship, ritual, law and political order, from the Victorian students of religion and culture to the twentieth century fieldworkers and their successors. A theorist belongs here when the cited article calls the person English, British or Scottish. It excludes American and French anthropologists, who sit in their own groups, and those placed with the symbolic, materialist or critical schools. Their work ranges from comparative studies of myth and ritual to detailed ethnographies of African and Pacific peoples and to debates over how to compare societies at all.
