Jennifer J. Freyd is a psychologist, professor emerit of psychology at the University of Oregon and founder and president of the Center for Institutional Courage. She introduced the term institutional betrayal, in connection with betrayal trauma theory, in presentations in early 2008, to name wrongdoings an institution commits against people who depend on it, including failing to prevent or respond supportively to wrongdoing within it. Her book Blind to Betrayal, written with Birrell and published in 2013, makes institutional betrayal a core focus, and she pairs the idea with institutional courage, an institution commitment to seek the truth and act morally despite risk and cost.
