A mesalliance is a marriage to a partner considered unsuitable, typically used to describe a union with a socially inferior partner, such as a morganatic marriage by a member of a royal family. The term, a gallicism, is also used metaphorically, especially in its misalliance variant, to describe a generally unworkable association, for example the ill-fated alliance of segments of the German nobility with Hitler.
