Sociology

Donna Jeanne Haraway is an American philosopher, born in 1944, who has contributed to the intersection of information technology and feminist theory and is a scholar of contemporary ecofeminism, work that criticizes anthropocentrism, emphasizes the self-organizing powers of nonhuman processes, and explores the relations between those processes and cultural practices. She taught women's studies and the history of science at the University of Hawaii and Johns Hopkins University before joining the University of California, Santa Cruz, in 1980, where she became the first tenured professor of feminist theory in the United States. Her work has shaped debate across primatology, philosophy and developmental biology; she received the Society for Social Studies of Science's Ludwik Fleck Prize in 1999, the American Sociological Association's Robert K. Merton Award in 1992 for Primate Visions: Gender, Race, and Nature in the World of Modern Science, the Wilbur Cross Medal in 2017, and the Erasmus Prize in 2025.
