Sidney Hook

Sidney Hook (1902-1989) was an American philosopher of pragmatism known for his contributions to the philosophy of history, the philosophy of education, political theory and ethics. Having embraced communism in his youth, he became a prominent critic of totalitarianism in both its fascist and communist forms, and after the Second World War argued that members of groups advocating the violent overthrow of democratic government could ethically be barred from public office.
