Mikhail Lifshitz

Mikhail Lifshitz (1905-1983) was a Soviet Marxist literary critic and philosopher of art, born in Melitopol and based in Moscow. Working closely with Georg Lukacs, he strongly shaped Marxist aesthetics in the 1930s, edited the Moscow journal The Literary Critic from 1933, defended socialist realism against modernist movements, and was elected a full member of the USSR Academy of Arts in 1975. His works include The Philosophy of Art of Karl Marx (1938) and The Crisis of Ugliness (1968).
